Three Real Examples Using MAJA
(MAJA Entry Point: PB)

The basic idea of these examples is to demonstrate the capabilities of MAJA using a simple and well-known chord progression. In this case, the chord progression is the three chords to "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix. These chords are:

Em11 - G - A

But this chord progression can be "adapted" to other genres of music by substituting other functionally equivalent chords in place of these. If this is done for the Jazz/Blues and New Age genres, then we could actually have three variations of the same functional chord progression.

Example #1 (Rock): Em11 - G - A
Example #2 (Jazz/Blues): Em7/E7#9 - Gmaj6 - A13/A7#9/A7b5
Example #3 (New Age): Em7/Em11 - Gadd9 - Asus2/Aadd9

One objective of these examples is to demonstrate how MAJA can be used to extend the original "Purple Haze" chords (the Example #1 chords) to generate these "other" chords (the Example #2 and Example #3 chords) - their names and how to play them (i.e., fingerings). A second objective is to show how MAJA can be used to generate improvisational options for all of these chords - in these examples a set of related scales that can be used to improvise tastefully in each genre/example.

All three of these examples begin in the Progression Builder (PB) module. For simplicity, it is assumed in this example that the MAJA user is a novice guitar player (using a 6-string guitar, conventional tuning). The steps of the example in high-level overview are:

  • Launch PB and enter the chords: Em11 - G - A. Export the chords.
  • Launch Chord and Arpeggio Builder (CB) and import the chords. Use CB to learn how to play the chords and learn which scales are compatible with the chords. From the extensive list of choices, select one or more scale(s). Export the scale(s).
  • Launch the Scale Builder (SB) module and import the scale(s). Use SB to learn how to play the scale(s) and learn which other chords are compatible with the scale(s). From the extensive list of choices, select one or more additional/new chord(s).
  • Launch the Progression Builder (PB) module and import the new chord(s). Build a composition using the original chords, the new chord(s), and scale(s).
